How to Play Aquaria: Rules & Mechanics
Aquaria is an atmospheric, tactile fluid deduction game built on the classic principles of Aquarium logic puzzles. Your challenge is to fill individual glass containers with water until every row and column satisfies its exact quota — all while obeying the inexorable pull of gravity.
Core Mechanics of Fluid Logic
The puzzle board is partitioned into irregular glass tanks, each delineated by solid borders. Rather than coloring cells at random, every decision you make is governed by two fundamental laws of physics:
⚖️ 1. Downward Gravity
Water naturally settles at the bottom of each glass chamber. A tank cannot hold suspended water while leaving empty air below it. Filling a higher level instantly fills all cells underneath it in that tank.
🌊 2. Level Surface Equilibrium
Water maintains a completely flat, horizontal surface across the entire breadth of each tank. If one cell at a given elevation contains water, every other cell in that tank on that same row must also be filled.
🎯 3. Row & Column Quotas
Numbered indicators along the top and left of the grid designate the precise count of water cells required in each column and row. When you hit a line's quota, its counter automatically dims.
✕ 4. Air Markers & Elimination
Switch to Air mode (✕) to mark cells that can never hold water. If a cell cannot contain water, no cells above it in the same tank can ever hold water either!
Deduction Tips & Pro Strategies
Every board in Aquaria is strictly deterministic and solvable purely through logic — no guesswork is ever needed. Here are the most effective deductive techniques:
- Sweep Zero and Full Quotas First: Rows or columns marked with
0immediately receive air markers across all their cells. Conversely, lines matching the full width demand that all intersecting tanks are filled at that row. - Cross-Row Cascade Deduction: Tanks that span 3 or 4 rows are your greatest leverage points. If filling the top row of a tall tank would exceed row quotas further down, you can instantly prove that the top row must remain air!
- Bottom-Up Air Upward Propagation: Because water cannot float in mid-air, identifying an empty cell in a tank means every cell situated above it in that same container is guaranteed to be empty.
- Zen Sanctuary Progression: Completing expedition levels unlocks rare aquatic life — from vibrant clownfish and blue tangs to graceful manta rays and bioluminescent jellyfish in your personal zen aquarium.
